here's what media talks about us

press & media coverage

Former Sunda and Maha chefs John Rivera and Minh Duong peddle bold southeast Asian flavours for their sorbet and gelato. There’s at least 25 available at once, including the vibrant and punchy ube halaya made with purple yam, blackberry jam and coconut curds, or the salty-sweet cocoa and toasted rice sensation that brings serious funk with a fish sauce caramel

Kariton Sorbites is something that I’ve already written about, when it launched as a lockdown project in August 2020. You can read about how it all started over here. Why am I writing about it again? Because in January this year, the online gelato business opened its first bricks and mortar location.

Kariton Sorbetes focuses on Filipino flavours and combinations – and they deliver all around Melbourne. Purple yam ice-cream is topped with caramelised coconut curds to make the signature ube halaya. Sweet banana gelato is covered in jackfruit. Avocado is blended with condensed milk and scattered with white-chocolate-coated grains.

This Filipino-founded, Australia-based gelato shop is coming to the Philippines - Kariton stands out in a crowd of local sweets with gelato inspired by beloved Filipino ingredients

MELBOURNE | You don’t need me to tell you what Kariton Sorbites is all about. You know about chefs John Rivera and Minh Duong’s gelateria that launched during lockdown as a gelato delivery business, before moving into a bricks and mortar location in Footscray.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for KARITON SORBETES!

Finally, Mamma got down to the new storefront in Footscray of this now-iconic gelato joint. Delectable, decadent and velvety ice cream with wild Filipino flavours like coconut and pandan, purple yam, salted (fish sauce) caramel and toasted puffed rice and more, with specials every day too - like silken tofu soft serve. Yum!

At Kariton Sorbetes, gelato isn't just dessert; it's a party for your taste buds. As John says “Ice cream and gelato always makes people happy. It makes you feel like a kid again."

It’s very easy to fall in love with the Asian flavours of the gelato. Pandan is a hard one for Mamma to go past, but the fish sauce salted caramel choc top is also a top fave.

Out of these, Kariton Sorbetes has been especially popular with the Asian crowd for their Filipino-inspired flavours. And honestly? The hype is real

Renowned Filipino chef introduces Australia to the flavours of 'dirty icecream'

If you told John Rivera he’d be making a living off putting stickers on gelato tubs one year ago, he would have laughed in your face. But 2020 had a plan; the fine dining chef joined forces with friend, pastry chef and business partner Minh Duong to launch Kariton Sorbetes, a dessert concept that puts South-East Asian flavours front and centre.

This Filipino-inspired ice-creamery by two top Melbourne chefs is scooping vibrant, textural flavours like ube, cheese and crème caramel in Footscray. Plus, playful cakes spiked with flavours like yuzu, coconut and ube.

Gelato is definitely something I’ve been getting my fix of during lockdown, and when I heard about Kariton Sorbetes launching a few weeks back, I knew I had to place an order.
